Latitude is a measurement used to know the distance in degrees from the equator of the Earth to either North or South. The word latitude comes from the Latin word “latitudo,” which means width.
Latitude is calculated with 180 imaginary lines that are known as parallels. Parallels make fictional circles around the Earth. These lines run east to west but measure your distance north or south. Latitude and longitude are used to create geographic coordinates on the Earth’s surface.
