The food chain, or trophic chain, is a sequence of organisms in an ecosystem, each serving as a source of nutrients for the next.
It begins with primary producers (usually plants or algae) converting sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. Herbivores consume these producers, followed by carnivores and, in some cases, apex predators.
Decomposers break down dead organisms, returning nutrients to the soil. This hierarchical structure illustrates the flow of energy and nutrients through different trophic levels, emphasizing the interconnectedness of species and the balance within ecosystems.
