Amphibians differ from the rest of the vertebrates because they experience a transformation during their growth. This change is called metamorphosis. Amphibians were the first vertebrates to adapt to semi-terrestrial life.
Characteristics of Amphibians
- Her skin is bare and wet.
- They have muscular legs, which allow them to swim or jump into the water.
- Its body temperature is irregular. They are cold-blooded animals.
- Young amphibians are born in the water and breathe through gills. Adult amphibians live on the ground and water and breathe through their skin and lungs.
- They feed on worms, insects, and other kinds of little animals.
How do amphibians reproduce?
They are oviparous and reproduce by laying eggs. Fertilization is usually external. The amphibian female lays her eggs in the water, and the male has the mission to fertilize them. In water, the eggs stick to each other and form voluminous groupings.
- The eggs are formed by external fertilization in the water. A gelatinous mass surrounds them.
- The egg grows and develops into a little embryo, which moves inside the thick shell of the egg.
- The tadpole hatches from the egg, which has a little tail that allows it to move and swim through the water. Breathe through your gills.
- The adult frog’s legs appear, and the tail and gills disappear.
