Verbs are words that show an action (jump), occurrence (develop), or state of being (exist). Almost every sentence requires a verb. The basic form of a verb is known as its infinitive. However, verbs can be classified into six basic forms:
- Base Form: jump, sing, love…
- Infinitive: to jump, to sing, to love…
- Present Participle: I jump, she sings, they love…
- Past Tense: jumped, sang, loved…
- Past Participle: jumped, sung, loved…
- Gerund: jumping, singing, loving…
There are three types of verbs: action verbs (run, read, eat, etc.), modal verbs (can, could, may, might, etc.) and auxiliary verbs (be, can, do, have, etc.).
