Verbs are words that show an action (jump), occurrence (develop), or state of being (exist). Almost every sentence requires a verb. The basic form of a verb is known as its infinitive. However, verbs can be classified into six basic forms:

  • Base Form: jump, sing, love…
  • Infinitive: to jump, to sing, to love…
  • Present Participle: I jump, she sings, they love…
  • Past Tense: jumped, sang, loved…
  • Past Participle: jumped, sung, loved…
  • Gerund: jumping, singing, loving…

There are three types of verbs: action verbs (run, read, eat, etc.), modal verbs (can, could, may, might, etc.) and auxiliary verbs (be, can, do, have, etc.).
