Gametes are specialized sex cells found in organisms that reproduce sexually. In humans, gametes are the egg in females and the sperm in males.
These cells are responsible for transmitting the genetic information from the parents to the offspring. During fertilization, the egg and the sperm unite to form an embryo.
Gametes are unique because they contain only half of the genetic material of normal cells, allowing for the combination of genes from both parents and genetic variability in the offspring.
