Hey super teachers! Here you have a new educational resource for your science classes. It is important to teach the terrestrial ecosystems when you are a Science teacher. Here you can find a complete bundle with theory explanations and an easy craft to practice the content.
What are the different terrestrial ecosystems
A terrestrial ecosystem is a land-based community of organisms and the interactions of biotic and abiotic components in a given area. The main terrestrial ecosystems are the following ones.
- Cold deserts: Antarctica and Greenland are cold deserts. Their characteristics are:
- Temperatures are freezing and there is little precipitation.
- The land is covered in snow and ice and there is very little vegetation.
- Animals have a thick layer of fat to keep warm.
- Taiga: It covers the north of Europe, Asia and North America. Their characteristics are:
- Temperatures are very cold and it snows in winter. The days are long and rainy in summer.
- There are many evergreen trees such as pine and fir trees.
- Herbivores, like rabbits and reindeer, live there. Carnivores, like wolves, live there too.
- Temperate forests: Many temperate forests are located in Canada, the eastern United States and China. Their characteristics are:
- Temperatures are cold in winter and mild in summer. Rain is moderate.
- Trees are mostly deciduous.
- There is a wide variety of animals, which often migrates during the cold winters.
- Warm deserts: The Sahara and Atacama deserts are hot and dry. Their characteristics are:
- Temperatures are very high during the day and cool at night. Precipitation is scarce.
- There is very little vegegation.
- The animals that live there, such as camels, survive on very little water.
- Savannahs: Savannahs cover half the surface of Africa. There are also savannahs in Australia, South America and India. Their characteristics are:
- Temperatures are high all year long. There is a “dry season” and a “wet season”. There is almost no rain during the dry season. During the wet season, it rains a lot and plants grow.
- The land is covered mostly in grass and a few trees and shrubs.
- There is a wide variety of animals.
- Rainforests and jungles: The Amazon and Congo rainforests are the largest in the world. Their characteristics are:
- Temperatures are high and it rains all year long.
- Vegetation is abundant.
- There are many different types of living things, it exists a huge variety of plants and animals.
As usually, we have created a cool and easy craft so the children can learn this content by making a fun craft. They can also glue the craft to their notebook. You’ll find it in the PDF file at the end of this post.
