As a teacher, I know how challenging it can be for children to manage their emotions and impulses in a busy classroom or even at home. That’s why I created this set of Self-Control Task Cards – a tool designed to help kids reflect on their actions, understand their emotions, and build strategies for managing them effectively.
When I first started thinking about this resource, I wanted it to feel approachable and practical. Self-control is a skill that takes time to develop, but with guidance and practice, children can learn to pause, think, and make thoughtful decisions. That’s exactly what these 60 task cards aim to achieve!
What’s Inside the Resource
The set includes 60 task cards divided into five unique categories. Each one focuses on a different aspect of self-control:
- The Basics of Self Control: These cards introduce children to the concept of self-control and why it’s so important in their daily lives.
- Is this an example of Self-Control?: I’ve included real-life scenarios where students can decide whether someone is showing self-control or not. These are always a hit in group discussions!
- Ways to practice our Self-Control: These cards teach practical techniques that children can use when faced with emotional challenges.
- The Result of choices: Here, kids reflect on the outcomes of their actions, which helps them connect their choices to real-life consequences.
- Identifying Causes: This new category focuses on helping children recognize what triggers their emotions, so they can manage those situations better.
Each category is designed to spark meaningful conversations and encourage children to think critically about their own behaviors.
How I Use These Cards
In my classroom, I’ve used these cards in so many ways! Sometimes, I use them as part of a small group activity, where each student picks a card and shares their thoughts. Other times, I hand them out as journal prompts, giving students a quiet moment to reflect and write.
These cards are also perfect for warm-ups, exit tickets, or even as part of a counseling session. I love how versatile they are – and my students enjoy them too!
Where to Get Them
You can find this resource in my Teachers Pay Teachers store. The cards are available as a printable PDF, making them easy to use in classrooms, counseling settings, or even at home.
