Why is reading comprehension important?

Children have to understand what they read because they need to turn the reading experience into a meaningful moment. When students are able to enjoy reading and understand what they read they become active readers and that’s one of the most important objectives during childhood. To be an active reader means to be engaged with the text and its information.

Without proper reading comprehension skills children get stuck and they don’t get to enjoy reading. If a child cannot understand what he is reading, it is necessary to practice and use some reading comprehension activities to make an improvement. Little by little they will get to understand what they read.

How can you help a child with reading comprehension?

When you realize your child or your student doesn’t really get to understand what they are reading, it is important to build reading comprehension. Some tips are the following ones:

  • Daily reading. Add some reading to the child’s routine, at least 15 minutes per day.
  • Check for understanding. When the child is reading, ask key questions so you can check if they understand what they’re reading or not.
  • Create a visual. Help your child understanding by drawing what they read.
  • Make inferences and predictions. Ask them to predict what might happen next in the story.
