When learning numbers, to understand the concept of quantity and how numbers are formed, you have to learn the logic behind it. Units and tens are the most minor elements that children must first understand to understand quantities, figures, and numbers.
The decimal system
The decimal system is the system used to represent numbers. This system is based on the number 10, which is used because it represents the number of fingers we have on our hands. This system is used to organize quantities and figures.
In the decimal system, numbers and elements are grouped 10 by 10.
The units
The unit is the smallest whole element that is used to count and represent figures. For example:
- 1 apple
- 5 notebooks
- 8 candies
Units are always placed to the right.
The tens
The tens group the units by 10 by 10. The tens occupy the second digit from the right.
- 10 ones are a ten.
- 20 candies would be 20 units of apples or 2 tens of apples.
Teaching tens and ones to children. Teaching these concepts to children can be complicated. For this, we will use numbers and graphic elements.
