The story follows an old fisherman named Santiago, who has had bad luck in fishing for 84 days.
Finally, he hooks a giant swordfish but struggles to bring it to land. The fish pulls the boat for days as Santiago fights exhaustion. Eventually, he manages to kill the fish and ties it to the boat.
However, sharks attack and destroy the fish on the way back. Santiago reaches the shore defeated but with a profound sense of achievement.
