The small intestine is responsible for absorbing nutrients from our food. This means that it takes the food previously decomposed by our stomach and ensures that these nutrients are used by our body.
It is where most digestion occurs, breaking down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats with enzymes and bile. The “walls” of the small intestine are lined with tiny finger-like projections called villi, which increase the surface area for nutrient absorption.
After this vital process, the nutrients are then transported into the bloodstream to be used by the body for energy and other vital functions.
