The liver is an important human organ located in the upper right part of the abdominal cavity, below the diaphragm and above the stomach, right kidney, and intestine. The weight of the liver is approximately 1.4 kg in women and 1.8 kg in men. This is about 2% of the weight of an adult person. It is the largest internal organ of the human body.
The liver’s primary functions are:
- Removing waste products and foreign substances from the bloodstream
- Regulating blood sugar levels
- Creating essential nutrients
The liver is reddish-brown in color in a normal state, and its external surface is smooth. Physical characteristics of the liver are modified by the impact of diseases and are also diagnostic characteristics of the same.
