A lake is an extension of freshwater separated from the sea, which has no connection with it. Lakes are surrounded by land. It differs from rivers because they delineate a course that generally flows into oceans. Lakes receive water from the rivers and rain.
Large lakes of great extension are called “sea”s, as the Caspian Sea in the Caucasus area (between Europe and Asia).
Depressions make lakes in the earth’s relief, caused by different geological processes, although, on some occasions, lakes have been created by man, as in the case of hydraulic dams.
