Five Tips for Fostering Scientific Thinking in Kids

Children can develop scientific thinking, logic, and deduction with some simple everyday practices. We propose putting the following tips into practice to achieve this.

Promote curiosity. It is advisable to invite kids to investigate, to try to understand how the objects they use everyday work, and to carry out small hit-and-miss tests. It is essential, especially when children are young, to allow them to manipulate materials, toys, clothes, etc. Through touch and sight, they will compare them, establish geometric relationships between shape and measure and assimilate their characteristics and functions. When they grow up, home experiments can be a perfect tool.

If it doesn’t come naturally, let’s ask them questions. Suppose we are dealing with children who are not very curious. In that case, we can arouse their interest by raising questions about the world around them and encouraging them to find an explanation for what they do not understand.

Let them try. Children should be given space to try to find solutions autonomously, according to their criteria, to the problems that arise regarding how to handle an object or situation. There will be time to advise them, but you must be patient and allow them to try it independently.

Subtly direct their learning. If kids have trouble solving a problem or coping with a situation, they don’t have to be answered. We must try to get them to deduce it by providing clues or asking them the right questions to find the solution themselves.

Use play and imagination. It is good to propose daily challenges or problems so that they try to solve them. Go a little further and ask them to invent objects for the future, or start a story and encourage them to finish thinking about what could happen to the protagonists and how they would react.
