Hey super teachers! Here you have a new educational resource for your science classes. It is important to teach the parts of a plant when you are a Science teacher. Here you can find a complete bundle with theory explanations and some worksheet to practice the content.
As we know, plants need four substances to make their own food: water, minerals, sunlight and carbon dioxide. Plants get these substances using three main organs: roots, stem and leaves.
What are the main parts of a plant? Explanation for kids.
Roots are the part of the plant that are normally underground and they are the main support for the plant. They are the first organ that a plant grows and the most important one. The stem gives support to the plant. It conducts water and minerals from the roots to the other parts of the plant. Leaves carry out vital functions, such as photoshyntesis. They can be classified depending on its margins, its shape, its venation or its arrangement.
What are the roots of a plant used for?
Roots are the part of the plant which attach it to the ground or to a support, typically underground. Roots main functions are:
- Give support to the plant.
- Take in water and minerals from the soil.
- Conduct water and minerals from the root hairs to the stem. Roots structure is formed by: root cap, root hairs, meristem and calyptra.
What is the stem of a plant used for?
Stem gives support to leaves and the main reproductive organs of the plant. Stem main functions are:
- To support leaves and brunches.
- Conduct water, minerals and nutrients to other parts of the plant through vessels.
- Conduct raw sap from the roots to the other parts of the plants and transform it into elaborated sap. Stem structure is formed by: pith, nodes, internodes, axillary bud and terminal bud.
What are the leaves of a plant used for?
Leaves are the organs of the plant that grow in the stem or in the branches. They are generally green color, light, plain and thin and their shape can vary. Leaves main functions are:
- Carry out photosynthesis.
- Carry out respiration that take place in the stomas.
- Carry out transpiration that take place in the stomas.
At the end of this post, you will find a link to download a PDF file with the bundle. It is, as always, a free resource with high quality pictures. In this bundle you will also find the following worksheet:
